Hiking

Let's Get Outside!

Hiking is a great way to explore nature.

Here are some helpful tips to get you started on your hiking journey:

  1. Start small. If you're new to hiking it is important to start easy so that you can build your confidence and strength before tackling more challenging hikes. California offers accessible trails including trails that are independently accessible to people with mobility, hearing and vision impairments. These are great beginner trails for new hikers.
  2. Know your trail. There are plenty of hiking websites, like AllTrails External link opens in new window or tab., that offer detailed information about trails that include the location of the trail head, grade, and length. Pay close attention to the trails type (network, linear, out and back, loop), uses (hiking, bicycles, dogs, equestrian), cumulative elevation change, surface, grade, tread width, and note of hazards or obstructions.
  3. Try hiking with a sighted guide. On more difficult terrain, a sighted guide can help you navigate the trail and potential obstacles. A short tether is a good way for you to stay connected to your guide.
  4. Consider hiking with walking poles. Nordic poles, which are like ski poles, can be helpful when hiking. Similar to a white cane, the hiking poles can assist with navigating terrain and identifying any upcoming obstacles. They can also help you balance on a rocky or steep trail.
  5. Have the proper footwear. Although not necessary for all trails, a good pair of hiking boots are a great investment. They provide ankle support for rough terrain and can reduce the chances of blisters.
  6. Be prepared. Whether you're going on a short one-mile hike or a longer six-mile hike, it's important to be prepared. Make sure you pack things like; extra water, snacks, a first aid kit, sun protection, and extra layers to ensure a safe and enjoyable hike.
  7. Have fun! Hiking is a great way to be physically active and enjoy all of the amazing things nature has to offer.
