Overview

Students reflect on their relationship with their white cane through poetry or personal narrative. The focus is on identity, growth, and self-advocacy. This lesson is designed to take 45-60 minutes.

Learning Objectives

  • Reflect on personal experiences with cane use
  • Use descriptive and figurative language
  • Communicate ideas clearly in writing or audio format

Activities

  1. Write a poem
    1. Include the following:
      1. One sensory detail
      2. One simile or metaphor
      3. One line about feelings or identity
  2. Personal Narrative
    1. Write a short story or paragraph that includes:
      1. Character (you or a fictional version of you)
      2. Setting (where this takes place)
      3. A challenge related using your white cane
      4. How the challenge was handled
      5. Reflection

Reflection and Conclusion

  1. Students respond to one (through writing or in a group discussion):
    1. "How has your relationship with your white cane changed over time?"
    2. "What does using a cane say about who you are?"
  2. Share and Reflect
    1. Has this exercise changed how you feel about using your cane, or how you view yourself, or your independence?
