Intended for Upper Elementary (3rd-5th Grade) students.
Overview
Students will write a short poem about their white cane using emotions, sensory details, and simple figurative language. This lesson builds vocabulary and confidence while reinforcing positive cane identity. This lesson is designed to take 30-40 minutes.
Learning Objectives
- Describe emotions related to white cane use
- Use sensory language in writing
- Experiment with similes or personification
Materials
- Writing paper or digital document
- Braille materials or large print as needed
- Optional word bank
Pre-Teaching: Writing Concepts
- Senses help readers imagine (touch, sound, sight)
- A simile compares things using like
- Personification gives an object human traits
Activity
- Students complete the following lines (with flexibility):
- My cane makes me feel...
- My cane looks like...
- My cane sounds like...
- My cane feels like...
- My cane (personification)...
- My cane is like... (simile)
- My cane makes me feel...
- Final product, students can fill out all the prompts or just 3-5, or add their own!
- They now have a completed poem, but don't forget to give it a title.
