Braille-Literacy Bee

A tactile map of the state of California

To expand on Ann Gelles' wonderful annual BRAILLE BEE, we will be hosting our 1st annual BRAILLE-LITERACY BEE on February 27th and February 28th. The theme this year will be CALIFORNIA, and all braille contraction word lists will be from this theme. Word lists and lots of fun California facts will be shared early with staff and students, paired with fun extension activities to foster literacy, acquisition of the braille code and knowledge of our great state of California, ending with our final BRAILLE BEE competition in February.

The cool thing about these activities is that they can include every student, as well as braille bee contestants. All students can learn about where they live, CALIFORNIA! Literacy activities vary in length, and different departments, including dorm staff, can support their students.

90% of employed people who are blind use braille. It is so important to create activities that foster literacy and create positive emotional connections to learning and using braille. That is what we hope to do at our annual BRAILLE-LITERACY BEE challenge.
